GPM Racing is proud to announce its sponsorship of UK GT4 pilot, Jaime Day who pilots an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the 2023 European GT4 season.
A year ago, the racing future of Jamie Day, a British driver based in Dubai, was uncertain. With his background in Formula 4 UAE and karting, the prospect of securing a single-seater budget was a daunting obstacle. As a result, the idea of more karting in 2022 was on the table. However, a turn of events dramatically shifted his trajectory.
Only a few weeks prior to the season’s commencement, his coach, Jamie Caroline, the British GT champion, introduced him to a promising opportunity in British GT. Day was set to race in an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 under the banner of R Racing, a team making its inaugural appearance in the championship. Alongside him was Josh Miller, another 16-year-old newbie. This duo became the youngest driving team in the tournament.
“His test at Snetterton happened quite close to the beginning of the season,” Jamie Ross, co-owner of R Racing, shared with Motorsport News, “Instantly, he showed his capabilities. He had never handled a GT car before. It was a done deal from that point.”
Caroline further contributed to MN, “He adapted to the vehicle swiftly, which speaks volumes about his innate driving skills. It’s a major asset to be able to step into any car and drive it. This will significantly benefit him in future when he’s asked to drive a variety of vehicles.”
Day, however, clarifies that he isn’t just a single-seater dropout resorting to sports cars. “I’m drawn to the endurance aspect,” he explains. “During the lockdown, we spent a lot of time doing endurance races on iRacing. I found the strategy side really intriguing. It required me to understand fuel management, tire considerations, and more.”
In their debut British GT race at Oulton Park, Day and Miller secured a remarkable second place, missing the victory by a mere five seconds. By mid-season, Day had earned his first pole position at Snetterton and, along with Miller, had won twice – at Snetterton and Spa. This success placed them squarely in the midst of a heated three-way battle for the overall GT4 championship.
Interestingly, Day often found himself directly competing against three-time Le Mans champion Darren Turner and the swift Sennan Fielding during qualifying and race stints. Day frequently emerged victorious, including his Snetterton pole during a weekend the team considered to be about damage control due to an unfavorable Balance of Performance. The newcomer Day bravely faced off against the British GT heavyweights.
GPM Racing is proud to be working with Day in our fervent quest for excellence.
